The working principle of the diamond roller is: by installing it on the dressing device of the grinding machine, the diamond roller dresses ordinary ceramic grinding wheels or CBN grinding wheels. After shaping the grinding wheel, parts are ground, thus copying the shape profile, precision, and dimensions of the diamond roller onto the surface of the processed parts through the grinding wheel. Its characteristics include simple machine operation, low technical requirements for operators, good consistency in product precision, stable quality, significant improvement in production efficiency and product quality, reduced manufacturing costs, and easy realization of automated grinding processing. Compared to traditional single-point diamond pen dressing, diamond rollers greatly improve production efficiency and achieve higher surface quality and precision for processed parts, making them particularly suitable for high-precision and large-scale production.
Diamond rollers are specialized tools for wheel dressing used in high-lifetime and low-cost applications for mass-forming grinding on dedicated machine tools and gear grinders.
Precautions for Diamond Rollers
(1) The grain size of diamonds should be one grade coarser than that of the dressed grinding wheel. Additionally, select diamond particles with similar sizes and shapes close to spherical; commonly used grain sizes range from #36 to #100.
(2) Generally, it is better to have the linear velocity direction at the contact point between the roller and grinding wheel aligned; a ratio (qd value) of roller linear speed to grinding wheel linear speed should be +0.3 to +0.7 but must not exceed +1; during dressing, a cutting depth per revolution of 0.5 to 1 μm is appropriate for the roller; each dressing operation should total between 0.02 to 0.04 mm; minimize light dressing time.
(3) The manufacturing error of diamond rollers should be less than about half of the workpiece tolerance; the fit clearance between roller holes and installed bearings should be between 2 to 4 μm.
(4) Natural or synthetic diamonds can be used; synthetic diamonds should use high-strength grade diamonds such as SCD (specialized for steel grinding) or SMD (high-strength diamonds).
(5) For manufacturing rollers, general precision rollers can use external plating methods or sintering methods; high-precision and complex profile rollers apply internal plating methods while simultaneously performing grinding dressing.
(6) When using diamond rollers to dress grinding wheels, follow this action sequence: fast approach (do not touch the wheel) → slow approach (feed at required cutting speed) → light dress → withdraw; do not skip steps; otherwise, it will be difficult to guarantee roller lifespan.
